How Much Better Is Llama 4 Than DeepSeek?

Llama 4 is Here!

Meta has finally released two new AI models with Llama 4 and with a third on the way, we are going to be seeing Llama Behemoth overpower DeepSeek in real time.

It's as if every week a major tech company announces a new step forward in their AI model that advances their position in the international AI arms race. Last week, OpenAI announced they would be releasing a new open weight AI model to compete against DeepSeek and now, Meta released two AI models as part of Llama 4, Llama Scout and Llama Maverick.

The funny thing about this announcement is that Llama plays a crucial role in DeepSeek's origin story. DeepSeek's R1 is a more distilled model based on Lllama and Qwen's architecture. Now, Meta claims this new model surpasses ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and DeepSeek across a range of vectors.

What is Llama 4?

Llama 4 is made up of two AI models thus far. Llama Scout, which is a smaller model built to fit onto a Nvidia H100 GPU, and Llama Maverick, the larger model, supposedly featuring better reasoning and coding capability than OpenAI's latest GPT model, 4o and Google's Gemini Flash 2.0.

As stated by Meta, Llama 4 was developed for users to make more personalized, multi-modal experiences, meaning across channels from images, to video, audio, and text.

Is Llama 4 Better Than DeepSeek?

According to Mark Zuckerberg and his AI team at Meta, yes, Llama is comparable to DeepSeek at less than have the parameters.

Llama Scout has a 10 million token context window, while Maverick has comparable capabilities to DeepSeek V3 using less than half the active parameters. Meanwhile, Llama 4 Maverick features the superior performance in relation to its costs, with its chatbot scoring ELO of 1417 on  LMArena.

Llama's new GPT engines give DeepSeek a run for their money, however Meta says it's only begun changing the AI landscape with their newest GPT models.

What is Llama Behemoth?

Still waiting in the works is Llama Behemoth, a new GPT version that will blow every other model released as of now out of the water. Llama Behemoth hosts 288 billion active parameters and 2 trillion parameters total.

Meta claims this new model includes features able to outperform all the competition in numerous STEM benchmarks. Llama Behemoth is developed to conserve its system's resources to only use relevant parts to each specific task.

Much like Meta's overall mission, Llama aims to make AI computing wasteless. Still, there are some philosophical problems with Llama that the AI community takes issue with.

Is Llama 4 Open Source?

Whether Llama is Open Source is a hotly contested topic in the AI community. Meta labels its Llama AI engines as open source but because they require commercial entities with more than 700 million active monthly users to request permission from Meta before using its models, then their policy goes against the Open Source initiative of 2023 which defined what it means to be Open Source or Open Weight.

Because this and other restrictions disqualify Llama from being a true open source model, the AI community considers Meta's many Llama AI models as Open Weight systems which only offer transparency with a few of a model's features, and not all.

What Are All These GPT's Still Lacking?

As Llama GPT's latest version gain momentum, we see each AI model attain superior training data but still fail to understand and generate text that sounds natural enough to trick a detector or human.

As good as all these AI models are in answering questions, generating readable answers is a task that only undetectable AI services can solve in the International AI arms race.

Services like StealthGPT still have superior text outputs if you want to use AI for business or marketing regardless if China or America wins the AI arms race. The truth is, only StealthGPT is the only AI system that won't get you penalized if you publish its outputs.
